skyberry House is a home offering hospitality to local unhoused children and families.
Our inspiration comes from Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin who created the well-established House of Hospitality to address the needs of the unhoused in New York City in 1933. Today there are over 200 Houses of Hospitality worldwide.
A House of Hospitality is a house where Hosts live alongside their guests, responding to the needs of the world in its own way, based on local needs and guided by the interests, talents, and faithfulness of its hosts. skyberry invites us to live and work in a different way with the unhoused in our community as an expression of our spirituality, living authentically, with integrity, and through a life that really means something.
skyberry House is a community that wraps children and families in hope and love by creating a transitional home where children and families feel supported and can grow and move forward in their lives, including into secure housing.
Our community consists of Guests, Hosts, and Volunteers. Guests are families (with children) who we provide with interim housing and support in their transition to stable and sustainable housing. Hosts live alongside Guests, providing daily rhythm and routines. Other volunteers support skyberry through a range of services. Can you cook, clean, or grocery shop? Garden? Do light carpentry? Facilitate meetings? Drive folks to appointments? Play games, sing, dance, tell stories? If any of this strikes a chord, then we’d love to meet you.
It might be important for you to know that we are an interfaith community, and some of us pray and believe in the power of prayer. We are curious about all faiths or lack of faith. We don’t proselytize in any way, so don’t let this be a turn-off. If you’re a (devout!) atheist, we’re good with that. Our mission is to lift up families in need. When we help each other, we grow in every way. That’s what it’s all about, right?
