skyberry House is a home offering hospitality to local unhoused children and families.
Our inspiration comes from Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin who created the well-established House of Hospitality to address the needs of the unhoused in New York City in 1933. Today there are over 200 Houses of Hospitality worldwide.
A House of Hospitality is a house where Hosts live alongside their guests, responding to the needs of the world in its own way, based on local needs and guided by the interests, talents, and faithfulness of its hosts. skyberry invites us to live and work in a different way with the unhoused in our community as an expression of our spirituality, living authentically, with integrity, and through a life that really means something.
In August 2024 we acquired a small house in Brattleboro, VT., and in 2025 our doors are open!
skyberry House is a community that wraps children and families in hope and love by creating a transitional home where children and families feel supported and can grow and move forward in their lives, including into secure housing. We are guided by faith-based practice, valuing interfaith collaboration. Our home environment is strengthened through rhythmic living, domestic arts, and shared striving.
We invite spiritually practicing or curious and socially engaged individuals to help host the initiative. The first step for interested potential Hosts is to contact skyberry House.
After an initial communication and conversation fill out the application webform here. Please click "continue"to fill the webform.
Once an application is received, a visit will be scheduled.
What is a skyberry Host/Volunteer?
PURPOSE
We are individuals and couples. We reside in a small house in Brattleboro or live locally or come from afar.
We share in the tasks* of maintaining a house to provide hospitality for our unhoused guests. We engage and take action with the greater unhoused community, committing ourselves to peace and non-violence.
Hosts live simply and learn together as a community with unhoused children and families.
PRAYER
We are part of an inter-faith community curious about all spiritual traditions. We are sustained by our shared practices and regularly pray together.
We cultivate opportunities for silence to deepen our relationship to the Divine within, in others and around us.
We develop our awareness that we are ONE and together we can grow what is good.
PLAY and LEISURE
We celebrate together, share meals, sing, dance, make music and play games. We create, craft, cook, garden. We converse. We are pro-people and low tech. We explore nature. We are happy to slow it down and we welcome rest.
